The only thing in farming that is certain, is that there will always be uncertainty.
One day, the markets can be great. The next day, you’re losing a dollar for every bushel you produced or animal you raised. Some years, the weather cooperates to bring you a beautiful harvest. Other years, the crop comes out looking pretty ugly.
On our farm, we have learned to plan ahead, take things as they come day by day, re-adjust as needed and trust The Lord that He will bring us through each year and provide for us in our need. There tends to be a lot of prayer involved, too.
This past weekend is an example of unexpected weather. We were not in a hazardous weather warning or tornado watch, but we experienced a funnel cloud forming right in front of us (only about a half mile to mile west of the field we were in) and reach down halfway to the ground as Dad continued on planting. It was quite amazing to watch form right in front of my eyes.
Watching clouds twist and clash together to form the start of a funnel was peaceful in an odd way. I did not feel in danger, only desire to get a fantastic photograph. And while seeking that image out, I realized just how unpredictable life really is.
There are moments, days and sometimes weeks of uncertainty. We face decisions, situations and people who challenge our situation and even in whom our faith and trust lies.
I’ve been reading through Job lately and can’t imagine what his life was like. But no matter what uncertainty he faced in front of him, he still recognized God as being powerful, his saving grace and the Lord of All. Here is a passage to remind you that no matter what uncertainty you may face at this moment, the Lord is in control and He has a plan. Continue to seek Him for peace & guidance in your situation. He has a plan.
“With Him are wisdom and might; to Him belong counsel and understanding. Behold, He tears down, and it cannot be rebuilt; He imprisons a man, and there can be no release. Behold, He restrains the waters, and they dry up; And He sends them out, and they inundate the earth.
With Him are strength and sound wisdom, the misled and misleader belong to Him. He makes counselors walk barefoot and makes fools of judges. He loosens the bonds of kings and binds their loins with a girdle. He makes priests walk barefoot and overthrows the secure ones. He deprives the trusted ones of speech and takes away the discernment of the elders. He pours contempt on nobles and loosens the belt of the strong.
He reveals mysteries from the darkness and brings the deep darkness into light. He makes the nations great, then destroys them; He enlarges the nations, then leads them away. He deprives of intelligence the chiefs of the earth’s people and makes them wander in a pathless waste. They grope in darkness with no light, and He makes them stagger like a drunk man.”
A person never knows what might get thrown their way in life each day, or the weather that will come along to help or harm one’s crops. But with all life’s uncertainties, there is still one thing we can be certain of: God’s goodness and faithfulness.
