the Back Roads

Riding on the back roads. Behind-the-scenes of what everyone else sees. That’s where I will be tomorrow….YES! It’s my favorite family trip of the year (besides the lake)…4-wheeling in the Black Hills. And I’m on my way there!

Since I was a little girl, my parents have taken my brothers and I camping all over the U.S., teaching us how to avoid the “tourist traps” as we call them and enjoy the scenery that everyone misses. And for the last several years, we’ve been trekking out to the hills with 4-wheelers on a trailer and anyone with a motorcycle riding on the highway.

On the way, we always see families and couples hauling a camper or riding in their SUV full of camping gear headed out to the hills. But they’re going to look at all of the things EVERYONE sees: the quick draws, big & obvious things to see the “attractions.” I always smile inside, thinking “if they only knew what they were really missing.” The real things worth seeing are on the back roads behind the trees, on the dirt roads and in little hidden valleys.

Life is like that. We often go through life noticing the “big” things and not taking the time or adventure off-road to find the hidden tidbits. And while we’re looking at Mt. Rushmore thinking how amazing it is, the Lord is begging us to take a hike around to the other side of the faces to find hidden surprises. It is up to us to take the time and effort to find those behind-the-scenes things, whatever they might be.

And when we do, we’ve embarked on a whole new adventure. An adventure that is unique to us and unknown to others.

“For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” -2 Corinthians 4:17-18

It is also helpful to remember that when I am serving behind the scenes, behind those serving that everyone usually sees, the Lord has a special adventure for me there. He notices all sides of scene and has a special, unique place for me. It is a joyful and abundant place to be. (Check out Matthew 6 for what the Lord says about doing things in secret!)

And let’s be honest…who doesn’t enjoy their very own, personal adventure! And one in Christ at that! 🙂

That being said, I’ll be enjoying my personal adventures (that I am blessed to be able to share with my family!) on the back roads tomorrow. I hope you take the initiative to go find your own behind-the-scenes action this week as well 🙂
